How AI Agents Automate Sales, Support and Operations
Real workflows where AI agents qualify leads, resolve tickets and run back-office tasks, plus how to roll them out safely with people in the loop.

The short answer: AI agents earn their keep on work that is frequent, rule-based and spread across several tools. In sales they qualify and route leads; in support they resolve routine requests end to end; in operations they move information between documents, inboxes and systems. The pattern is the same everywhere: the agent does the routine work and a person approves what matters.
What makes a task a good fit for an agent?
Before picking a use case, check four things:
- Volume: it happens many times a week.
- Clarity: a new employee could learn the rules in a day.
- Access: the systems involved have APIs.
- Measurability: you can tell whether the outcome was right.
Tasks that pass all four are where agents pay back fastest.
AI agents in sales
Lead qualification. An agent reads inbound form submissions and emails, enriches them with company data, scores them against your ideal customer profile and routes hot leads to the right rep within minutes.
Meeting booking. It answers first questions, checks calendars and books a call, so reps spend their time in conversations instead of email threads.
CRM hygiene. After calls and emails, it logs activity, updates deal stages and drafts follow-ups for the rep to approve.
AI agents in customer support
End-to-end resolution. For requests like "where is my order", "change my delivery address" or "cancel my subscription", the agent verifies the customer, checks the relevant system, takes the action and confirms.
Smart triage. For everything else, it categorises, prioritises and summarises the ticket, attaching the order history and a suggested reply, so the human handling it starts with full context.
Policy-aware exceptions. Refunds within policy go through; anything outside it is queued for approval with the reasoning attached.
AI agents in operations
Document intake. Invoices, purchase orders and delivery notes are read, checked and turned into records in your ERP, for example NetSuite.
Inbox processing. Shared inboxes for suppliers or partners are sorted, answered or routed automatically.
Reconciliation. Agents compare records across systems and flag mismatches instead of someone checking line by line.
We saw the operations side first-hand with TechTransit, where an AI engine now assigns most deliveries to drivers automatically, with dispatchers free to override.
How do you roll agents out safely?
| Stage | What happens | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow mode | The agent drafts actions; people execute them | Measure accuracy without risk |
| Assisted mode | The agent acts on low-risk cases; people approve the rest | Build trust, tune thresholds |
| Autonomous for routine | Routine cases run end to end; exceptions escalate | Capture the time savings |
Move between stages based on measured accuracy, not a calendar.
What should you measure?
- Share of requests resolved without a person
- Accuracy against a reviewed sample
- Time to first response and to resolution
- Escalation rate and reasons
- Customer satisfaction on agent-handled requests
These numbers tell you where to expand next, and where the agent needs better instructions or tools.
Where to start
Pick one workflow, connect the two or three systems it touches, and run it in shadow mode for a couple of weeks. If you want help choosing and building that first agent, our AI agent development and AI automation teams do exactly this.
Frequently asked questions
- Which department should start with AI agents?
- Start wherever you have high volume, clear rules and measurable outcomes. Customer support usually fits best because tickets are frequent, similar and easy to evaluate.
- How long does it take to launch a first agent?
- A focused agent for one workflow typically reaches a production pilot in four to eight weeks, including integrations, guardrails and testing on real data.
- What does an AI agent need access to?
- Only the systems required for its task, through APIs with scoped permissions, for example read access to orders and write access to ticket notes.
